The following is a press release issued by the Fire Brigades Union, which has been the subject of much press attention of late:
Fire Brigades Union general secretary Matt Wrack revealed today that newspaper reporters have been pestering his ex-wife and his student son.
“One reporter, a woman, visited my former wife on Wednesday and asked her to talk about me” he said. “The reporter said she was from the Daily Mail. My former wife shut the door on her. Another came to my student son’s flat when he was not there, asked the neighbours about him, showed them a picture of my son, and rooted about in the dustbins.
“This is happening because I am the general secretary of a trade union involved in a high-profile strike. I appeal to reporters to leave my family alone. I am the target, not my former wife or my son, or any other member of my family.”
Whatever you think about the FBU’s decision to strike on Bonfire Night, is such an intrusion into the private lives of the general secretary’s family really necessary?
This wouldn’t be the first time the Mail has tried to smear someone they don’t like by using their family…
