Warning: Something bad might happen in 172 years!

I don’t want to worry you but… in 172 years an asteroid might hit the planet. Are you scared? No, of course you’re not. Why? Because it might happen in 172 years, when you and everyone you know is long dead.

So, having said all that, would you consider notification of such a possibility to be a warning?

As far as warnings go, it’s not very helpful… What can we possible do about it? You warn someone so they can be prepared for or avoid something.

Could it be that “Massive asteroid might hit Earth in 2182, say scientists” doesn’t sound quite sensational enough?

I like how they say "Within the next 70 years" as if that's some sort of extremely tight deadline. I know NASA isn't the most organised agency in the world, but come on.

And what on earth will the average Daily Mail reader do about it? Beyond writing a letter or comment on the site.

Anyway, everyone panic!
